What is C-rate (discharge rate)?
C rate — is a technical indicator of current output. It defines how quickly a lithium-ion battery can safely deliver or receive charge relative to its capacity. For FPV drones and FPV quadcopters, this parameter is important because it affects the drone’s maneuverability and its ability to meet power demands. If we take our Lishen LR2170LA lithium battery with a peak discharge current of 45A as an example, the approximate C-rate is about 11C. This means the permissible load is roughly 11 times the capacity of 4000 mAh. In practice, a high C-rate ensures stable power delivery and reliable operation for combat FPV drones.
What is the difference between Li-ion and Li-Po?
First of all, both types are lithium batteries, but they have different internal chemistry. What can be said about lithium-ion? Li-ion batteries provide energy for a longer period because they have a lower C-rate. Yes, they are not ideal for FPV racing, but on the front line—where drones require longer flight time, such as reconnaissance FPV drones—they are the most suitable option. Now about Li-Po. Lithium-polymer (Li-Po) batteries are soft-pack cells whose main advantage is a higher maximum discharge rate, which is suitable for aggressive flying. This type of battery is more suitable for people who are interested in drones as a hobby, which is more common in Western countries.
What does the 6S2P configuration mean?
There are two types of connections: series and parallel. The number and combination of these connections are called a configuration. For example, in our pack built with Lishen cells, the configuration is 6S2P, where 6S stands for series connection and 2P stands for parallel connection. For drones, the base configuration is 6S (6 Series). Six series connections determine the voltage: with each cell having a nominal voltage of 3.6 V, the total voltage reaches approximately 22 V (rounded), which is required for powerful UAV systems. Then, depending on the drone used, the battery capacity is increased by adding parallel connections. The designation 2P (2 Parallel) means a parallel connection that doubles the capacity and current output: if one cell has 4000 mAh, then 2P = 8000 mAh.
How should batteries be charged properly?
This is indeed an important question. What does “proper charging” mean? Proper charging is the even distribution of energy across the cells, which helps avoid imbalance within the battery and prevents overheating and overload. To ensure proper charging, battery chargers were created. These devices usually have standard XT60 or XT30 connectors, as well as a port for connecting a balance cable. All you need to do is connect the XT60 cable and the 6S balance cable from the battery to the charger, set the charging parameters required for a Li-ion battery, and wait until the charging process is complete.
Where should batteries be stored?
The first thing you should know is do not store Li-ion batteries fully charged or fully discharged. The recommended storage voltage is provided by the manufacturer and is referred to as “Storage Voltage”, which usually means 3.7–3.8 V per cell. Storing batteries in the storage state minimizes capacity degradation. Now let’s talk about storage conditions, specifically the temperatures at which batteries should be kept. Li-ion chemistry requires a cool, dry environment (10–20°C) — not too cold or too hot. This means keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, but also not in a refrigerator. It is also important to understand the consequences of unfavorable thermal conditions: Cold temperatures can reduce maximum capacity and accelerate battery wear. High temperatures can cause gas formation inside the cells, leading to overheating or, in the worst case, a battery explosion.
