Batteries for EW and SIGINT

What are batteries for EW and SIGINT systems, and why are they needed?

Batteries for EW (Electronic Warfare) and battery modules for SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) systems are specialized Li-ion power sources designed for military equipment. They provide energy to sensitive and strategically important systems, playing a crucial role in the operation of modern mobile and stationary communication jamming, signal interception, data transmission, and relay systems.

These energy sources are not just for powering electronics — they ensure stable, long-term, and uninterrupted operation of high-precision systems, which often determine the success of a combat operation, the effectiveness of a SIGINT complex, or the range of an EW system powered by a battery.

Modern batteries for specialized equipment must operate under the harshest conditions — in humidity, low temperatures, or dusty and vibrating environments. Civilian battery solutions are not suitable here. Reliable power sources for EW systems and long-lasting batteries for SIGINT must be built for field use.

We have developed dedicated battery packs tailored to these tasks. The most common configurations include:

  • 6s1p — a balanced solution for portable EW devices or individual modules;
  • 6s3p — a more powerful pack with greater capacity, providing hours of continuous operation;
  • 7s1p — increased voltage up to 29 V for more powerful EW systems where stability is critical.
  • ENERGY MODULE — a cassette-type system for uninterrupted power supply to EW/SIGINT systems in vehicles. It uses specialized 7s1p battery packs.

They are used in antenna systems, EW-cases, mobile control panels, modems, repeaters, and even in field radio stations.

Design and types of battery assemblies for EW/SIGINT

Batteries for electronic warfare and battery modules for signals intelligence are not just a set of cells in a case — they are complex engineering solutions tailored for specialized military equipment, where power stability, reliability, and long operation times are mission-critical.

Most of our configurations are based on Li-ion batteries for EW and SIGINT built with SK Innovation E603A cells using Li-NMC chemistry. These cells offer high discharge current, stable voltage, and a wide operating temperature range from -20°C to +60°C. This makes them ideal for SIGINT batteries with broad temperature tolerance and EW modules used in open environments.

About SK Innovation E603A cells

SK Innovation E603A are pouch-type cells with the following specifications:

  • Capacity: ~60,300 mAh
  • Nominal voltage: 3.6–3.7 V
  • Maximum voltage: 4.2 V
  • Peak discharge current: up to 60.3 A
  • Chemistry: Li-ion NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) — high energy density and balance between power and capacity
  • Temperature range: -20°C to +60°C
  • Cycle life: up to 2,000 cycles with proper BMS and balanced assembly

Thanks to their combination of high energy density and thermal stability, these cells are ideal for use in mobile and field systems. They are resistant to overheating, have low self-discharge, and perform well even at sub-zero temperatures.

That’s why SK Innovation 60ah is our core choice for most configurations — they meet real battlefield demands.

Structurally, these packs include:

  • BMS module (Battery Management System) — the "brain" of the battery. It monitors each cell’s charge level and protects from overheating, overcharging, and deep discharge.
  • Balancing — an essential function for battery longevity. The BMS equalizes voltage between cells to prevent imbalance and extend service life.
  • Bluetooth monitoring — our packs are equipped with a wireless system that allows users to check voltage, temperature, cycle count, and charge level.

We manufacture battery enclosures from aluminum, making them lighter while maintaining durability — resistant to vibration, impact, and dust, ensuring robust field performance.

Maintenance

Although our batteries for military equipment require minimal maintenance, several basic recommendations apply:

  • Do not allow deep discharge below 3.0 V per cell;
  • Do not store fully charged for extended periods without use;
  • Use high-quality chargers configured for EW and SIGINT battery systems.

Battery testers for EW/SIGINT are also helpful for maintenance — allowing verification of charge levels, resistance, and cell condition before deployment.

Disposal, service, and replacement

Once a battery’s life cycle is complete, it must be properly disposed of — Li-ion NMC batteries require specialized handling.
